Red Stag Timber rally to support Red Stag Rotorua Marathon

Published 25 April 2024

More than 50 Red Stag Timber staff are supporting the 60th anniversary edition of the Red Stag Rotorua Marathon on 4 May by donning their trainers and participating in a broad range of events.

An organisation with a ‘people culture’ built on a foundation of wellbeing and safety, the 2024 Red Stag Rotorua Marathon, presents the perfect opportunity for Red Stag Timber to set an event-related goal for their workforce.

Melissa Bennett, the Red Stag People and Safety Manager, said: “By encouraging our staff to participate in the Red Stag Marathon, we are helping not only our team members stay fit and healthy, but this event also allows for team building and mingling outside of work, with other staff we may not see regularly.”

“We also get to meet and cheer on family members who are either participating or watching in support.”

A total of 56 staff will compete in the full marathon, the half marathon, the Go Media 10km and First Credit Union 5.5km, encouraged to compete with the carrot of a discounted entry rate.

“Getting out there amongst the other participants creates a sense of pride for our staff to be associated with the major sponsor, supporting one another to participate and finish, whatever the distance.” adds Melissa. “We strive for a ‘one team’ attitude, which helps us all to succeed inside and outside of the workplace.”

Has Red Stag been making a special effort to encourage staff to enter the 60th anniversary event?
Yes, we have offered discounted entry + free tees as well extended to partners with a 50% reimbursement.

Why has this been so important to you as an organisation?
Red Stag’s people culture is built on Wellbeing and Safety.  Participation in the Rotorua Marathon events is one way we can get out there training and exercising, with finishing our chosen event as the goal, alongside our Red Stag workmates.

What are the major benefits of entering the 2024 Red Stag Marathon as an organisation?

Not only are we helping our team members stay fit and healthy, the big day presents the opportunity for team building and mingling with others that we may not see very often, given we have various shift patterns and over 330 staff.  We also get to meet and cheer on family members who are either also participating or there in support.

What is the breakdown of how many staff have entered which events?
5.5km x10, 10km x13, Half x10, Full x15

How do you feel entering the 2024 Rotorua Marathon has help bring together the organisation closer together?

Getting out there amongst the other participants creates a sense of pride to be associated with the major Sponsor, supporting one another to participate and finish, whatever the distance.  We strive for a ‘one team’ attitude, which helps us all to succeed inside and outside of the workplace.

Do you have any interesting anecdotes of staff at Red Stag entering the 2024 Rotorua Marathon?

One is turning 60 this year, and wanted to get a medal so has gone all out and enrolled in the Full Marathon event to get a medal with 60 on it, as well tick off a bucket list item.
